General Questions

1. With GenuTax Standard, tax year updates for future years are free. What's the catch?

There is no catch. We have developed GenuTax Standard under the same model as other software companies that do not produce tax software.

For example, consider your favorite office suite software. The company that produces your office suite software continues to release a new version of their software every few years. The new version contains new features. If an existing customer wants these new features, they can upgrade their software for a fee. If they don't need the new features, they can continue using their older version of the office suite software. They are not forced to upgrade.

With GenuTax Standard, in the future, we may release a new version of the core software with new features. If an existing customer would like the new features, they may upgrade their software for a fee. If not, they can still continue using their older version of GenuTax Standard with the free annual tax updates.

4. Previously, I used a different tax software package, but I would like to switch to GenuTax. Will GenuTax import the tax return information I entered using another tax software package?

Other tax software developers have gone to great lengths to encrypt the contents of their tax return files, to ensure the confidentiality of tax information entered, and for anti-competitive reasons. These file formats are often altered from year to year.

Rather than spend a great deal of time and effort attempting to decrypt our competitors' file formats, with unpredictable results, we have designed the interview in GenuTax so that, whenever an amount to be carried forward from a previous year is requested, you are clearly instructed as to where to find the carry forward amount, such as from a certain line on a certain form from your previous-year's tax return.

Alternatively, since GenuTax Standard is multiyear tax software, you have the option of re-creating your prior year tax return using GenuTax Standard. Then, when you create the next year's tax return in the same GenuTax taxpayer file, all relevant tax amounts will be automatically carried forward.

Installation / Setup

1. May I install my copy of GenuTax on more than one computer?

Under the terms of the software license agreement for GenuTax, you are permitted to install the software on as many computers as you personally own and control within your own residence, as long as GenuTax will not be run on more than one computer by more than one person at the same time.

2. If I purchase a new computer, or my hard drive fails, how can I re-install my copy of GenuTax?

New serial numbers were issued on January 20, 2010. If you purchased your copy of GenuTax Standard on or before January 20, 2010, you can find your download web page address and assigned serial number on the GenuTax release notification email we sent you for version 1.29 of GenuTax. If you purchased your copy of GenuTax after January 20, 2010, you can find your download web page address and assigned serial number on your original purchase receipt.

You may re-download and install your copy of GenuTax at any time using this information.

If you cannot locate your newly-assigned serial number, go to this linked web page to retrieve the information you need.

Interview

1. Why are there so many questions in the interview?

We have designed the software to be extremely easy to use, especially for those unfamiliar with income tax forms. Hence, our approach with the interview is different than that used by other tax software.

The thorough interview in GenuTax can assist you to get every deduction and credit that you are eligible for. As you enter your information in the interview, GenuTax ensures that the necessary tax forms are automatically completed.

GenuTax includes a streamlined interview feature. If you are very familiar with tax concepts, the streamlined interview allows you to pre-select the tax subjects that apply to your situation. The interview will then only ask questions that are related to the topics you selected, allowing you to quickly complete your tax return.

2. I need to change something on my tax return before I file it. Can I go directly to a specific topic in the interview in order to make my change?

To go to a specific section of the interview, click the Jump to Section button at the bottom of the window, or press the F9 key at the top of your keyboard. Select the interview topic you would like see from the list, and then click the Ok button. You may need to scroll the list to find the topic you want.
